Cranfield
I do not have a mechanically aware bone in my body and know nothing about the workings of motor vehicles. I have had an occasional metal on metal grind sound from the off side rear of my Toyota Surf for a few weeks.Looked under it this morning and there is a rubber "cap/pad" that seems to have broken off in the area of the suspension/spring. I would like to have a rough idea of what the problem could be, before I take it to my local garage.Any comments would be appreciated. TaxiDriver
Is it at the top of the spring ? If so, sounds like the top mounting has given up the ghost. Edit : just reread and notice you said rear, not sure if its a macpherson type strut on the back similar to the front If it is, I still think its most likely the top mount. Cannon
If Macpherson there may be a rubber spring insulator on the strut itself. If the spring has snapped it's possible this rubber insulator could have been pushed to off the spring rest on the strut. Pics would be helpful
Cranfield
It went into the garage this morning. They found a broken piece on the front offside trackrod area (I will find out the proper name) and the nearside unit was very loose, both were replaced. I cannot now replicate the grinding noise, they say it came from the front, but it did sound like it came from the back. The rubber "cap/pad" is a load bump pad and the springs and suspension appear fine. They will replace the bump pad at the next service. Thanks for the interest.
