Land to shoot in Bedford

Hi Guys,

Well hopefully I can be a little more helpful than the bloke from up north!

Across the road from where you live is one of the biggest farms in Bedfordshire, it's known as Bedfordia they allow people to shoot vermin on their land,ie rabbits and pigeons, what you need to do is get the phone number for their estate office and ask to be put on the shooting list, it's a long wait I waited two years, but if you persevere and phone them regularly you may get some success.

Hi Honda, how did you get on with Bedfordia? Any luck or is it a 2 year wait?

I tried knocking on doors and writing letters all to no avail. Even where landowners were responsive they said they had someone already.

Once you get one its then a lot easier to get the next as you have a contact. I now have plenty of shooting land.

Comments i have had are ' When i have said yes to a shooter you see them once or twice on a nice day and then never again'

'I said yes and before i knew it it was not them shooting but there mate'

'They only want to shoot the game and don't want to do the crop protection work.

On the other hand I loose track of the times i get asked to come over to shoot hundreds of crows ravaging crops that turn out to be just one or two.

I always agree with farmers that they will call me when they plough, spread, sow or crop. They only call when they sow.

+1. Once you crack the nut and get your first ground you can start the name dropping. As soon as farmers know you are serious and do a good job they will mention it to others. I was lucky in that I worked on a farm for many years so picked up my first permission 10 years ago when I moved back to mid wales (farming friend). I looked after the ground very well and after 8 years (as work changed) looked to get some more ground. Spoke to a few people who knew how well I had dealt with pest problems at my first permission and they were happy for me to shoot for them. The key thing is not to take on more ground then you can cope with as there is nothing worse then letting the farmer down.

I got some business type shooting cards through vista print and dropped a few off recently. A fair few "no thanks" but one farm I followed up with a letter and got a call. Nice permission (250-300 acres). Unfortunately one of the farms I also shoot (550 acres) mentioned another farm of theirs in the hills that they wanted me to shoot on so I have ended up a bit of a busy fool at the moment as it is another 500 acres.

In essence keep on the case mate, you will get there.
