Gully
I've finally joined the CPSA and thought I'd do my first registered shoot this Sunday at Hornet. However, all my mates have got other things to do so I'm going on my own. Wondered if anyone else was going?
pin
Where's hornet? Edit: ah, long crendon. If I get a pass I might come along
Catamong
Nice little ground, targets not too testing, although facilities not up to much. Gully's already shot there, (first time out I think), and he shot well for a newbie. I'm afraid I can't make it as I'm shooting the selection shoot at Doveridge, near Uttoxeter. I'm gonna need my thermal longjohns if the weather forecast is to be believed. Cat.
Gully
Yeah, forgot - its near Thame, J7 of the M40. Pin, I was planning on a quick morning shoot - with Cat last time we left Hemel at 8.30, at the ground for 9.30 and home around 12 ish. Let me know if you want to do it. I've just had a look at the weather for the weekend - jeez, what's going on, I'd just got my bermuda's out.
pin
I'd be up for a smash and grab raid yep, but the weather looks poo for Sunday - I have a pass so if it looks reasonable I am up for it
Dunkield
The last couple of times I have been up there they have used the fields more and more (the shooting used to be mainly in the copse) so wrap up warm as the wind can whip across the fields. I will be interested to hear what you boys make of it, Hornet is one of my bogey grounds, I just never do very well there
pin
Any reason stuart? Or just one of those things?
Catamong
Stuart, The simple reason why you're missing so many of Kevin's birds in those fields is that you ain't giving them enough lead, so if you miss the first one, stick a bit more on the second one, and bingo, you may strike lucky...?? Don't shoot any of those lovely Red Kites Cat
Gully
Don't tell me someone's actually shot one Cat? When I was there with you one was hovering in my line of fire and everyone just said 'don't worry, if it feels the odd pellet it'll soon fly off'. I must admit the thought of the RSPB dragging my **** through court put me off a bit on that stand
pin
Nothing on the website about plastic/fibre - hope I don't have to use ***** fibres Just checked the weather, looks like we might stay dry but at 9C with a 28mph Easterly wind it's going to be very cold
Dunkield
Any reason stuart? Or just one of those things? Not realy sure Pin, as Cat says I may just be not giving them enough - it is all in the head, I have had some nightmares there, but the sorrow is easliy drowned at the pub down the road on the green (sorry can't remember it's name) It has always been fine using plastic wads there, which seems odd as the fields are normally full of sheep
Gully
Last time the stuff in the woods was hittable. I'll not forget the battue in a hurry. |Nor the one that everyone had to tell me 'there it is' before I realised there was a clay in the air. Oh well, bring it on. pin
I am glad, I have picked a cart and I shoot well with them, I don't like changing now. Even if it makes no difference to the pattern it makes one in my head which is probably more telling
Catamong
Plaswads are fine, shoot well boys, let us know how you get on. cheers, Cat.

pin
Hmm, very interesting. Got there and like most places today it was blowing an absolute gale. Got stuck in and the rather than the wheels falling off it appeared neither of us brought any wheels with us The layout was very testing, a lot of fast targets which more often than not were being adversely affected by the wind. No too ways about it though I shot very badly, dropping birds hand over fist. In fact if it hadn't been for me giving myself a mental kicking on the way to the second last stand it could have been a lot worse (8ex10 and 9ex10) Was nice to meet up with Gully again, who shot well for his first competition but I know he wasn't happy with his performance - lots of room for improvement all round I think Finished on 54ex100 I think 43 for Gully. High gun was 84 which probably goes some way to validate the fact that it was a hard layout with the wind not helping.
Gully
Thanks for sharing that Pin You did well to pull the stops out on those last 2 stands. You and I were 37 and 33 respectively out of 80 before that and it was looking pretty grim. I'm not offering any excuses, I shot like a tw^%. Feeling the gun blowing around in your hands is a new one on me though. Had a look back to when Cat & I went. It was the second day of owning my gun and I shot 44, one more than today. Says it all really... Back to the drawing board...
pin
As we kept saying the conditions were terrible, I'm chalking this one up to experience and forgetting about it
Catamong
Having shot today in the same abysmal conditions, I think you both shot pretty well, as StuartP has found out, Hornet is a tricky little layout, you've both got to keep plugging away, and believe me, your scores will improve. Well done to you both, don't forget you went out when most sensible people would have stayed in bed, and welcome to the (sometimes slippery) competition circuit..!! :o Cat. Dunkield
Not withstanding the weather, when Cat said the birds aren't too testing there, I had visions of you boys coming away with some big scores. We find Hornet/Valley View/Four Counties the real levelers, just when I think I am doing OK we end up going to one of those and we come away thinking we still have a lot to learn, or we need to get out more often! Ultimately I shoot with a decent bunch and we 'compete' within our group, any one of us can shoot pretty well on our day, and we never know whose turn it will be to have nightmare, or shoot a blinder. pin
Looks like the wind must have dropped later on, we were out of there by 11.30 and last entry was 2.30. I think HG was 90, at the time we left I don't think there was even a 70 in - how it goes some times I think I have learned a lot from shooting there in those conditions - you need a game plan and you need to stick to it
Catamong
Don't be too put off by the odd "doomer" score, as the averages will not include any score more than 10% below your "raw" average, i.e. if you've averaged 60 ex 100 over, say 5 shoots, then you go and shoot a 50 under dreadfully windy conditions, the 50 scored will not be counted towards your classification. Doing it this way prevents the sandbaggers shooting themselves down into a lower class. Cat.
