Shadowchaser
I have a hammer action shotgun which I paid £950 for last year and I enjoy using it. The stock however is too short for me and I've been using a sleeve over the end to lengthen it. I remove the sleeve when I've shot since I don't want it to discolour the stock. I am wondering about having the stock made longer by having the gun shop add a rubber piece to the end? After such an alteration I'm not sure if the stock could be easily made original again or if it will indeed reduce the value of the gun. Would it be best to carry on using the sleeve? I know it's a first world problem but I'd just be interested if anyone else has had a similar dilemma.
welshwarrior
Personally I would have it extended in walnut as it looks nicer and won't reduce the value of the gun.
dougall
how much extra do you need?If done well wont impact value...as an old piece use a Silvers pad looks right too.....
Gunman
Depends on how much length you want . If its 3/4 to 1" inch then a proper Silvers style rubber pad would be in keeping but not a more modern type pad . 1/2" you can get away with a nicely shaped and finished horn plate . Other than that yes go for a wooden extension trying to get the best colour match possible . Painting in grain if done correctly is ok but if not it can look awful and personally I avoid doing so just going for colour match . Does it have a pad or heel plate on it now as this will have to be taken off thus making for a longer extension . Other advantage if it does is that if you have a Silvers pad fitted you can take it of and put the original pad back if you ever want to sell the gun on . I would guess that its original length will be 14&1/4 or 14&1/2" so really a well fitted and finished extension should have little or no affect on the value . Shadowchaser
The gun does indeed have a plate on the butt, held in place by two screws. The sleeve I currently uses adds roughly 1 inch to the length which makes it perfect for me to shoot with.

This is your answer..I had a gunsmith add a silvers pad and perfect for extra inch..
TriBsa
If memory serves, S W Silver and Co of 67 Cornhill London were granted their first patent for an anti recoil pad in 1872. Although the simplified version, as produced today; of vulcanite backed rubber was patented 12 years later.
