naddan28
I am trying to get a Gas Ram fitted for my Lightning and although i know it can be done by the individual, I am useless at those sort of things and having never stripped a rifle I didn't want to start removing dangerous springs! So having phoned 2 of my gunshops (KWG, Ashford and Wilsons Manston) I who cant fit them I wondered if its common practice? The only shop left is the one who sold me the gun (greenfields), who i've swore not to return too! Any ideas?? Now not sure what to get for my birthday as currently being a bit skint so don't really want to upgrade to a .177 PCP. Any help/ideas much appreciated, Dan
njc110381
I got mine fitted by my local shop. I guess it just depends on their motives for sales. They wont make a huge profit if you already have the ram, so some just can't be bothered with it. It's also not a standard part, so maybe that could be putting them off? If you've fallen out with a shop, don't go there. They'll never give you a good service. Getting a spring out of a Lightning is easy, but getting the ram in is something more of a challenge according to the chap that fitted mine! reedbradshaw
whats a gas ram ?
Cyber
a gas ram is used to replace the spring inside a springer. Instead of compressing a spring to deliver the power you compress a gas ram that compresses air instead. You will still get recoil and noise due to the mechanism but it is quieter and there should be less recoil. Hope that helps mate
Gully
If you want me to talk you through it I will (by email or PM). It really isn't very difficult, you need some allen keys, screw drivers, and a vice or some way of compressing the spring. I can send you the tool I made to push the spring past the pin. Thanks, guys for two very kind offers/tips. Currently I have emailed Theoben asking whether they know of either any dealers near me or whether (& how much) they charge themselves. NJC, I have not brought the gas ram as I was affraid this might happen. The worrying thing is KWG said that they would have to send it off to theoben as its 'quite complicated' but can respring and tune my step dads old meteor fine? Surely the ram is easier? njc110381
A spring will have enough give in the first stages of compression for you to force it into the gun by hand (just). When I got my gas ram it was solid, and there was no way I could shift it without tools.
Gully
If you can get the gun to me in East London or Herts I'll do it for you assuming its very similar to my lightning XL. but I'm going away for a couple of weeks minimum on business on Friday so it would have to wait till 2nd week in April. I can courier it back to you from work for under a tenner.
dodeer
Most shops won't do it as the warranty they have to take on is never worth it, little money in it, not enough time to do it with lots of shotgun jobs to do, and last but not least airgun customers are normally small, boring moaning *******! Not saying you are though!

Not saying you are though! I agree but when I have spent over £250ish in the space of 4 months i would consider myself to be a decent customer? But still the shop refused to do anything about my lightning (purchased 2nd hand) when I discovered it was only 9.5ftlbs-10ftlbs. Hence why I wont go back, but if its my only chance then may have to suffer.
naddan28
Theoben have said no they dont fit the kits, they are DIY kits. Really impressed with them though, emailed at 10pm reply by 830am the next day! So now I am going to try one or two other local shops then if not contemplate whether I can go it alone and DIY it!
