billy boy 12g
Hi all, I was wondering what you all thought of this scope for the use of long range shooting on a .17 HMR (when I can get my application sorted). would just like people opinions on this scope or any other recommendations for around the same price. thanks in advance, Billy. Don't think it will have enough magnification for the 700 yard hares. Go bigger In all seriousness, I have never needed more than 10x mag on the hmr - usually stays on 6x. Sacrifice some magnification for glass quality would be my advice. Edited June 16, 2015 by marnold

steve_b_wales
For a 17 HMR, a scope with a 4-12 x 50 magnification would be ideal. Many good makes out there, including Nikko Sterling & Hawke. The Hawke Endurance 30 is excellent, and like most of the Hawke range, it carries a 10 year warranty. I had one, and after 3 years, it developed a fault. I sent it back to Uttings, and received a brand new replacement 4 days later.

I personally don't take the hmr past 120yards because, in a nutshell, I'm not good enough What is your budget mate, if you don't mind me asking? billy boy 12g
I'm looking at hopefully shooting it out to 300m (paper only) with practice, I defiantly want a scope with zero lock visible turrets and my budget is around £

I think my Hawke in the HMR goes up to x20 and have used that on very rare occasions and then only on long range when I had found the rabbit on a lower magnification first. There are few, if any scopes that 'do it all'. Believe me, I have tried to find the one scope that would be comfortable both punching paper and would also be suitable in the field and I don't think it exists! I would advise you to choose a scope based on the #1 priority application, and be brutally honest with yourself. For example, if you are going to be bunny bashing up to say 120 yards 90% of the time then choose a scope based on this. Hawkes are good for the money, I like MTC scopes but a bit heavy and are sensitive to head placement due to white-out. I was always told buy the best glass you can and spend the rest on the gun - and it is very true! Hope my reply doesn't sound callous, I am just trying to save you from throwing money away on a do-all scope that, actually, does naff all. Like I said, I've been there and done that - and it is seriously annoying!! ps. I think consistent, repeatable 300 yards would be a bit of an ask with a hmr, but I'm happy to be corrected! billy boy 12g
the main reason I want a scope with zero locking turrets is because I want to use the turrets for elevation and windige adjustments instead of holdover and with regards to constant accuracy at that range I have know idea that's what I want to find out, what the maximum range I can shoot with an HMR then hopefully move up to bigger calibre's once I've learned the basics of long range shooting

I don't really have the knowledge of the second hand scope market and what £200 will get you so I won't comment on whether this is a possible, maybe someone else can offer you some advice. All I know is that the Hawkes I have, I wouldn't trust to dial in consistent adjustments. The only scope I have ever had that was 100% bang on was a Nightforce, although others have come very close but none were less than £1000! malkiserow
given what you said, maybe look at a MTC Viper as this is good for range work with the kind of turrents you wish for and OK for rabbits

steve_b_wales
I'm using a MTC Genesis 5-20 x 50 on my .17 Hornet, after taking it off my .22 Hornet. An excellent scope, and the turrets can be set to '0' once you have found your zero. That way, when you adjust windage /elevation, turning the turrets back to '0' gets your scope back to where you started. I think they retail for around £340 now, but shop around.
