Urgent info for game river anglers.

I've just been made aware of the below report made by the EA regarding fish with UDN or another fish disease, many anglers know that any trout stocked in rivers, lakes and reserviors, must now be triploid (cannot breed), if there is a catastrophic fish kill in any UK river, there will be no native fish to take and bred from, this is were the EAs rules and regulations are a farce. Please be aware of this and if anyone sees fish with white fungus, to report it to the EA and please ask for reference number, that way, all reports can be noted and not passed off as an unimportant call.

Good Afternoon,
Hopefully you don’t mind receiving another communication from the Environment Agency so soon after the last newsletter. We felt that this was of enough importance that we should not wait for the next newsletter.

There have been multiple reports of dead and dying salmon and sea trout mostly in the Coquet but also some in the Tyne, Wear and other rivers. We are aware of the issues and are liaising with colleagues from other areas as well as staff at our National Fisheries Laboratory. Similar reports are being received around the UK.
Although of concern, the reports are not unusual, and these issues do occur sporadically. The likely cause is environmental factors leading to increased stress and susceptibility of the fish to natural pathogens.

The attached information leaflet, prepared by staff at the Laboratory, gives some more information.

At this stage, we are asking anglers to read the advice given in the attached briefing and report where infected fish are seen. Although there is little we can do to reduce the impact, we are keen to understand any common factors or any patterns that may begin to emerge.

It is worth noting that although it is a concern, the proportion of the overall run affected is relatively small.

The rule covers Browns and rainbows, considering all rainbows stocked into ponds, lakes and rivers have been triploid for many years, this is the EA claiming to be protecting the native fish, on the River Wear, the stocks of native brown trout are very low and according to many anglers the fly life isn't what it used to be, therefore any introduced fish will be competing with the resident fish for the limited food.

Not only is UDN present in the River, Furunculocis and Sapelegenia are too, all these manifest as a white fungus which attacks the head if the fish mostly, not nice to see.
