KFC
Put my foot down a bit to get up a hill and I thought Wailing Jennings had come on the radio. Turned radio off and realised every time I reached a rev range then this horrible howling sound started. So long as I took it gently it didn't happen. My thought was that a bearing in the gearbox was going and my wallet was empty I took it to a man who knows about these things this morning and took him on a quick drive to demonstrate the problem. His first diagnosis was the turbo going. Got back to his garage and the turbo checked out OK. The next thought was alternator. Dropped the serpentine belt off to prove it and the noise was still happening. He then got underneath while I revved it. Straight away he could see it was a hole in the intercooler pipe that was vibrating like a clarinet reed as soon as enough air was going through it. Quick graft in of a new rubber collar on the pipe and the howling noise stopped. Phew! nowhere near as expensive as I'd imagined and I don't have to buy a new 4 x 4. This one only cost me £550 three years ago so I know it's on borrowed time but, for now, it lives to play another day
Dave-G
Nice one - I had that same issue with an ali pipe joint on one of my older Galaxy cabs. It just needed fitting back in correctly.
