kennett
Morning all, need some last minute advice! Looking at the weather forecast we are due a pretty horrible week rainfall wise, my shoot is on heavy clay land and the pens are starting to get a bit wet in places. Now my dilemma, do I put straw down in the really wet/busy areas just until the weather improves then clear it up? Obviously it's not ideal because of the harbouring disease aspect, but neither is them being up to their knees in mud and poop!
MattSoanes
we have the same problem so made a couple of shelters, then put straw under them so atleast it stayed dry and gave them something to scratch around with in. We used a couple of fence panels propped up at 1 end with some tin laid over the top.
Paul223
I did exactly what Matt has said a few weeks back using straw under shelters to add some warmth, it's been a relatively cool and wet summer. Usually straw is a big no but sometimes your balancing other risks... Edited August 23, 2015 by Paul223
kennett
Thanks, already got plenty of shelters, this is more where they are using feeders and drinkers, I keep moving them a few feet every day but it is starting to get a bit too wet for my liking! Think I might bite the bullet and put some down this afternoon
pg123
Would grit sand be any good? We put grit sand down this year and the birds love scratching around in it.
