njc110381
It had to be the best programme I've watched in ages. A load of KFC regulars going to his farm and cooking for themselves. Being started off with a dead chicken on the table didn't help some, and there were tears (especially at the end when one of them helped to kill a bird)! It must be the opinion of 99% of the british public that killing animals is unacceptable, yet they eat mass produced chicken. These guys were taken to a bulk chicken producers place to see where their KFC comes from, and most of them were really uncomfortable. I think it done some good, as most of them now only eat free range. How can anyone complain about what we do then eat this stuff? Their living conditions are really bad, and they reach full size in 5 weeks
Dr W
They reach full size in 5 weeks as they're pumped full of hormones and steroids. It's reckoned that one of the reasons that breast cancer is so high in the west is due to diet which includes eating mass produced animals and dairy products. I switched to only eating organic stuff some years ago and cutting back on red meat. You wouldn't catch me eating meat from a supermarket in fact I'm generally a hater of supermarkets and what they force suppliers to do to actually make a profit. It's a strange thing that doctors recommend cutting back on red meat and dairy for people when they get ill but don't mention it as a preventative measure before they get ill. SNAKEBITE
I think HFW should come up with a nice recipe for Johnny Kingdoms three legged deer!
BobGee
A bit off topic I know but I have to agree with Dr W about the supermarkets and their rules for suppliers. Some years back I had shooting permission on a farm that was mainly market garden, the farmer grabbed me one evening and asked if I could put some effort into shooting the rats round the waste piles, said yes and bought the rimfire out, good backdrop, lots of dead rats. I told him a few days later that he wouldn't have so many rats if the waste was reduced-- think I touched a nerve! The "waste" in question were runner beans and he showed me the "template" that beans had to pass through before the supermarket would buy them! Perfectly good beans that had to go to compost because they had a curve in them and could not fit in the trays for display.
Dr W
Seems silly to waste them, be nice if he could sell them locally and undercut the supermarkets, however I imagine the costs and time involved would outweigh any gains. Perhaps a charity should go round farms like this and collect spare food that doesn't meet the supermarket 'standards' and give it to local schools and old people's homes. Get Jamie Oliver on the case.
SNAKEBITE
This rubbish about fruit and veg having to fit a criteria before being sold in a supermarket really annoys me. A shameful waste of good food.

Its why you should only eat British meat. The US has hormones injected particularly in beef and its reckoned Girls reach puberty about 2 years earlier now. Worrying stuff as its just not natural or right. In the UK it is much better but I'd certainly not eat mass produced chicken products any more. as a company we used to deliver up to Bernard Mathews and it was grim seeing piles of dead chickens that hadn't made it to the factory alive but had died in transport
