Mightymariner
After a disappointing barley and rape harvest (in shooting terms) I returned from holiday on Thursday hoping there would be some wheat stubbles attracting some pigeons. After spending most of Friday drying out wet camping gear I got an unexpected few hours out. So, wanting to make the most, I took the gear and headed for the closest fields to home (also in the knowledge I needed to be home by 7pm). It was blowing a good wind in the right direction so setting up was an easy decision as I know the flightlines in this area. The stubble was the only one of five with bales left on it so I knew there was a chance they would come to collect them. Anyway, the pigeons cooperated with birds decoying well and also flighting over into the wind, making for some good shooting. Had I been able to shoot better, and started earlier than 2pm, I am fairly confident this would have been my first 100 bird day. Anyway, they did come to collect the bales but having a quick word with the driver, he said "we won't be long, carry on, shoot as many as you can and don't stop for us!" So, I did as told. The action continued until I had to pack up, with a fantastic late flurry around 6.30pm when my barrels were too hot to touch. I picked 54, and lost six behind me. And, before someone says the pigeons were piled messily in my truck, I will point out I laid them out to cool overnight when I got home, before they went to the game dealer the next morning! A great, and unexpected afternoon, and I was home by 6.55pm for brownie points! Edited August 30, 2015 by Mightymariner

JDog
Good. You would never have known how good it was unless you made the effort. The rain this afternoon will have curtailed the wheat harvest in the Wolds. Fields will then be cultivated reducing their attractiveness to pigeons and when the wheat harvest gets underway again there could be some good shooting. That's my theory anyway and I'm sticking to it.
