A very satisfying 32

At the end of our village there are 4 wheat fields that I have permission to shoot on. One is the tiniest field that you can imagine, probably only 75m long by 40m wide! A couple of sweeps of the combine and it's all cut!

The other three are bigger and are on my dog walking route so I am able to see them every day. Over the last week particularly, the pigeons had become very interested in these fields so on Wednesday when I saw the combines at work I started getting excited about the prospects for an afternoon out on Saturday.

Thursday there were a good number of birds dropping in to the farthest field and the same Friday so with much excitement I got all my gear together for a Saturday afternoon session.

They must have known I was coming. At 12 ish there was hardly a bird to be seen. I watched for nearly an hour and still hardly anything. I've been working hard recently and didn't fancy going home so decided to get in the hedge with the wind behind me and just sit and contemplate my bad luck.

Out went the rotary, a floater and six frozen birds. No sooner had I sat down when the first bird came in. And then a second, and they continued to come in for a good couple of hours.

Most birds committed well to the decoys so it wasn't difficult shooting but I really should have shot more, I missed far to many easyish ones!

When I got home I laid them out on the garage floor and breasted them this morning. I now have more than enough pigeon to keep me fed well into 2016 and beyond. The 32 made me think.......what would I do if I really struck gold and shot a huge number? There are only so many friends who want them and I don't shoot enough to be of interest to a game dealer.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time yesterday, 30 odd is just a nice number to deal with ( I have saved 8 for decoys)

The thing is.......when I took the dog over the fields today about 3.30pm the place was literally swarming with pigeons, I've never seen so many around here. Hundreds of birds down on the stubble and birds joining from all directions it seemed. I think I may head out again this week.........
