eieieio
I have opportunities to go game/duck shooting and to work the dog on weekends however these places are some distance from me. What I would love is some local farmland that I could train the dog on during the week. I must be in the minority 1% of people on this forum who have no interest in pigeon shooting or pest control. I have no other reason to want to access the land other than to have somewhere to train the dog, away from the public, who seem to want to (or due to lack of control over their dogs) disrupt or interfere with what you are doing. What I would like to know from land owners and farmers is: a) In general would you consider allowing someone access to train their dogs. Providing that waste is picked up, don't enter fields with livestock etc.... b) Would payment be appropriate and if so, how much? Roughly. c) If I hand over a business card, what information would you like to see? d) Would you allow the use of starter pistols and dummy launchers? e) Anything else that may be appropriate. Thanks in advance everyone. Obviously I want to increase my chances of getting permission and limit my chances of annoying the farmer/land owner and looking like an idiot. bigbird
Hmmm. Difficult one. We are so lucky in that we have our own land plus other permissions and shoots that we have free access on (obviously this also comes in the form of dogging in and when we have shifted the birds we have free rein) Farmers are funny creatures though, I don't know what to suggest. Somebody will be along who does shortly I'm sure. Pointless post of the year award goes to me there I think! felly100
When I started training my Lab,I got up first light. Now,the distractions are all part of the training. Winter is obviously harder though. Get knocking on doors mate.
bigbird
Are there no gundog clubs near you?
E.w.
Bigbird (farmers are funny creatures though) I didn't no we had met face to face, as you know farmers work with people they trust no amout of coin will change that. The best way forward is visit a few farms and put your reasons for training the dog to the farmers in person.

malmick
Interesting ideas here. I recently got my ESS from bigbird and she has seen the type of place where I take him and the possible risks from unwanted attention of others. I took him for a training session on Sunday in a field behind a local farm shop which would be ideal to use at other times. It crossed my mind to ask on the next visit whether or not I could use the field for quiet training sessions. He does love to run in the woods though. Cheers, Mick
eieieio
Thanks for the replies. I'll put a decent shirt on, take the dog and approach some local farms. E.W noted re the trust and not money. I just want to make it clear that I don't just expect to get things for free.
