kitchrat
Just got back from my long holiday and have been out looking for birds. Some are in the paddocks, some are on fallen acorns and some are on the late drillings, as you would expect. But I aslo saw considerable numbers on wheat/barley fields where the crop had already grown a few inches. I know there could be weeds in there too, but crawling about on my hands and knees failed to find any. The pigeons were definitely feeding on hte fields, not just resting up, as determined with the bins. So what is going on??
aga man
Is it stoney ground? perhaps they are gritting as they have been feeding on seed drillings?

popa bear
Could be feeding on the new shoots its happening around here some guys were shooting on it at the weekend and had opened the crops on previously shot birds to find young shoots in there
dad
so much drilling done at the same time at lot of fields grew an inch before the pigeons got to it all the wheat that was on the surface started to chit and now the birds get a seed with a bit of growth too, seed that was lying just under a small clod of soil has grown and is easily pulled up, some of the pigeons i have shot have had seed with growth coming out of both ends

Is this a new trick they have learnt, or have I just not know it before - I had always thought that a green field was no use to the birds, unless there were weeds to eat. dad
time is on there side. i have seen wheat fields covered with seed lying on the top for 3 weeks a rain on it washes the red off of it it starts to grow on top of the soil sending little root shoots out that try to get under ground then the top starts to shoot then the pigeon comes along and gets a bigger meal the rest of the field could be an inch hi by now, if all the fresh drilling is finished they go onto that. spring peas can be like that they dont touch whats lying on top untill there is growth coming from both ends, i have waited 4/5 weeks on peas before they started on them and some times they eat them straight away.
