I have a picatinny rail on my rifle; it is merely a platform for securing other devices such as 'scopes etc, unless I've misunderstood. Effectively enabling shooting at longer ranges with greater bullet drop. A standard rail is a parallel or flat rail that is just a mounting option. That's my understanding of it anyway.
