Shotgun Reloading For a Newbie

Recommended Posts

I would like to know about reloading, it seems that it cant be cheaper to load your own shells rather than buy new by the 1000's, but thats not why i want to do it, when i take on a hobby and way of life i like to be able to do it all and then base by decision on doing it a certain way by experiance rather than ignorance. So if anyone has a couple of minutes to reply that would be great. Ive been offered a Bowland reloader jig, looks good, the bloke wants fifty quid for it. My questions are

1/How do i buy the powder and how much?.

2/Are there books available?

3/Where do i buy the shoot?

4/Is this whole thing dangerous for me and my gun.

I reloaded shotshells for a short time when I lived in South Africa. Cost me more than factory loads. Didn't work any better.

If you HAVE to bump your head, get a Lee Load-All. It's cheap and works well enough. Try The Sportsman in Paignton, or Midway UK. They'll sell you the rest of what you need too. Lyman has an excellent shotshell reloading manual.

But if you want to reload for centrefire rifles- now that another matter entirely.

1/ Clay game reloading will only accept pick ups of powder.

2/ Yes lots, but the internet has lots on it, try the LEE website as they have instruction there and a few vids too.

3/ Shot can be bought from 1 above.

4/ Yes if you mess up or don`t follow the reloading recipes and rules to the letter.

You will find that you won`t get cheaper except for loading non toxic shot.

If you have old black powder proof guns like me but are restricted to what you can buy over the counter to keep 'em shooting then reloading is the best way fwd. All I could find was an ounce of number 6 BP cartridges and that was when they were available.

Have a look here, I can now reload for everything from skeet to fox!
