Trouble with walking to heel.

My ESS who's 5 months old which I know is still young, has a habit of lying down as soon as I slow right down or stop while walking him.He has a harness on as he's a puller, and at training class we're told to stop, turn around etc also offering treats at snout height, the idea being I guess to show your the master. So what happens is he pulls like mad,I stop or slow right down and he just collapses in a heap and won't move till I say walk on.... I'd like him to keep standing at least, maybe he's just young and daft still.

If it is a full body harness it will aid him in pulling. That's why sledge dogs wear them.

Generally the halter type head harness work better as if you can control the head you control the dog.. They just need some habituation training to them and someone actively working them with one on as they can get them off if left unattended. If you have his head up he will find it more difficult to collapse in a heap.

They do need some practice with and proper fitting to work effectively and gentle use as most work by tightening around the muzzle when they try to pull.

Later on the head halter can be swapped back to a slip lead as they get the idea of where you want them. He is still very young yet lots of time for the basics to filter in.

There is a type of harness with the connection on the chest - they pull and it turns them, does work, our little monster would walk to heel well at classes, etc. but on a general walk(she knows the difference) pulls like a sled dog whatever you did. Tried the head halter and she just spent all the time trying to drag or rub it off, damaging herself in the process, but tried these and problem almost gone, still pulls a bit at start of walk (excitement probably) but after 5 min (almost) perfect. Can't remember the name (daughter bought it) but there are at least 2 manufacturers.
