Conygree
After sod all on Sunday - that sort of day, went for a walk around yesterday. Started with a pigeon and a bunnie, and my first young squirrel for this year - felt better, then went to one of the rookeries and found some branchers out. Its on an old wooded iron-age fort with a good approach with plenty of gaps to shot through, some of the rookeries are very high and in dense woods with no bottom cover. I used my moderated 12g with the help of a gas crow scarer 400m away my shots didn't disturb the birds - only my movement, even popped a pair of squirrels. Carried onto the next hill after bunnies and pigeon, heard my first Cuckoo. Finished with 4-bunnies, 3- squirrels, 2-pigeon and 7-branchers - slept well

Cranfield
Often a walk round can be more productive than sitting in a hide.
invector
Your mention of shooting branchers already, got me out. I visited my two rookeries, but saw no branchers, and shot two adult rooks anyway. Last year I started on May 1st.
Conygree
I couldn't believe it either just one rookery out of say 8, I crept up the hill saw a few shot them saw they were branchers - waited for things to settle again, noticed 2- branchers in an fully leaved oak on the edge of a nest and some more in a nearby oak but didn't fly off even with the sound of a moderated 12g. The other sites I can hear them but no sign yet - we are waiting for more to appear then all the shoot and farm staff are planning an evening 'tour-de-rookeries', this will be more like mass shoot-out. On early summer the oaks are fully out, lime half out and no sign of ash even budding, we have cuckoo, swallows and the hobbies are back. On the pigeon side after late summer and all winter hardly any in our area but now they are back in big numbers. One man on the shoot clocked 67 on sunday
