The .204 Ruger

Recommended Posts

John, if you can reload for one, carefully, you might get it to ******* work, without paying a fortune. ;)

I had the caliber for 6 months and hated it, fooling myself that it did the job, but no :good: . Got the .223 and never looked back. :good:

It seems as if the above links will not work unless you register. Apologies.

I feel it would be wrong of me to post comments made by others but my comment was as below.

"I am so pleased that some people are finding the 204 to be as good as the US hype suggested it would be some 3 + years ago.

I bought one in 2004 and after struggling to import ammo started with 222mag cases and homeloads. Funnily enough accuracy wasn't too bad despite the greatly reduced velocity - about the same as the Hornady ammo once it arrived here. To date I have been disappointed, not in the ability to provide a long flat trajectory and accurate shot but in its killing power.

I would now NEVER use it on a fox at any range and only take hares and rabbits out to 200yds when I have a good shooting position. To me it is a calibre that is neither one thing nor the other because of the effect it doesn't have if the shot is less accurate than it should be. I have literally cut rabbits into separate pieces at 250yds but at the same time have nipped the spine of some at 60-120yds and have them try to crawl away dragging their back legs. I know shot placement is the most important aspect to any shooting with any calibre but the larger the bullet the greater the damage tends to be and the greater the leeway for a less than perfect shot. 85 grns from the 25WSSM on body shot hares at 250yds lifts them well clear of the ground and they do not move once they have landed.

Everyone to his own, but for me the 204 is more an alternative to the HMR or 22 rim than the 22 centrefire despite the fact that on paper it can outclass 99% of them.

Personally I am a great beliver in deciding on the calibre you need then going one higher for most species and on that basis for Fox I would not choose less than a 243 and prefer the 25-06 to any other. "

No interest in 22-250 or shooting deer, too loud, too many people, too much hassle. I don't shoot foxes much over 150 on the lamp in either case since I do a lot of walking, and like to stalk close to them :good: Payback is a b***h

Well said lad. :good:
