Bit of Shotmaking

I run my pot at 350c for 7.5 shot and slightly cooler for larger shot. I don't recall the Littleton shotmakers having heat control so maybe it will self regulate to some degree if the element isn't too powerful. I find proper 7.5 shot quite hard to make relatively. The 0.5mm dripper is about as small as you can reasonably use and doesn't drip as easily as drippers with larger holes. 0.6mm making no7 or 0.8 making no6 shot would be an easier prospect. At the other end of the scale 1mm drippers make 4.5-5 shot and can stream if you're not careful because the hole is so big. The footage at the start of this thread is of 7.5 shot and you can tell it was dripping well by how evenly they were all running but it does take a while to turn out any volume of these small pellets.

Does the dropper coolant warm up because lots of shot or does it need cooling? Will 50 litres of water do it?

This stuff is too technical for me!

Yes the coolant does warm up. Depends on how much of it there is and the time of year along with how much shot you are dropping in to it. With fab con I use about 12litres to fill my metal waste paper bin catch tank and in the summer make maybe 15 or so kg before I stop. it's heading towards 50c at that point.

To make 7.5 or smaller with flow problems, would it not be possible to increase the size of the molten lead dish to hold maybe three times the volume of molten lead and higher temp to force a decent flow through the dripper nozzles.

Even a catering bean can size of molten lead hopper, it may be possible to make even smaller shot.

The big makers can't be doing it any different just on a bigger scale with tanks or shot towers. Just as well I don't have a ready supply of lead, id be in my garage playing until I got it to sizes I wanted.

So we must assume that any size larger than fours must be tower dropped?
