andypaint
Hi, not been on for a while due to various reasons, but now I've logged back in there is alot of the forum menu missing, such as the shooting opportunities and the game and vermin categories and vehicles. Basically my variation has come back for a. 223 and I can't decide what to get, it cz or a howa? Edited March 19, 2016 by andypaint
Pheasant Feeder
Welcome back. To answer your question on rifle choice, I went to a local gun shop who had a selection of .223 and handled the following, 2 CZ527's, Tika T3 lite, Tika595, Howa 1500, Ruger american. Ruger american, felt so cheap and plastic I handed it straight back with the instructions 'Don't ever show me that again' The Tika T3 lite felt a reasonable quality rifle but quite small for my 6'2" 18 stone frame. Tika 595 had a lovely wood stock, with the origional iron sights, the inside of the action was still like new and I was very tempted, but the barrel wasn't screw cut and despite the offer from the gunsmith to do this that and the other, I just couldn't bring myself to butcher such a beautiful origional rifle. The CZ 527 one had an origional stock a felt very narrow around the grip, similar to an old side by side, the other had a different stock (cant remember what) but the palm swell was like grabbing hold of a horses fetlock so neither felt right. The Howa just felt right from the off, and despite picking the others up again I kept going back to the Howa so ordered a new Howa 1500 with an olive green hogue overmoulded stock and a blued sporter action. I've had it a few years and I'm very happy with it, it shoots sub MOA with factory ammo (in fact I've cloverleafed with Black Hills) it does everything I want of it. I've used it on Fox and Roe (in Scotland) and I'm happy I made the right choice. My advice based on the above is visit a gun shop and handle as many rifles as you can to see which you like. andypaint
Thanks, seems to be working now might have been something my end. I am leaning towards the howa, would you bother with the stainless option. What rounds are you finding suits it best?
Pheasant Feeder
For me I'm quite happy without the stainless but I've nothing against them. As for ammunition I've been using Black Hills 60gr Vmax and they have been excellent (groups touching at 100m) but I just can't get any more anywhere, so I'm going to have to start experimenting. PPU has been acceptable as has most 55-60gr I've tried but having been spoilt with the Black Hills, the inch groups of the PPU seem a little dissapointing lol. Mines a 1:12 twist. A good mate bought a 1:9 twist as he wanted to shoot heavier bullets over a longer range, mainly for target and he's struggled to get the ammo sorted. He's had to go down the homeloading route. I started reading expecting a howa slagging off but I have the same as you and love it.
team tractor
I use Winchester varmint x 55 gr and shoot 3/4 inch groups at 100 yards so I'm happy with that. Can't fault my howa and I've used tikka, cz but I feel you can really make a gun your own by swapping stocks, triggers etc. mines a stainless sporter with green houge stock. Would I buy another? Yes I would 100%

Yes its not a Blaser/Sauer/Sako but for the money and as a working rifle its spot on.
nighteye
I thought I had bought a pile of horse manure when I first got my howa , now with my homeloads sorted I'm getting sub inch groups at 290 yards and I like it so much that I bought a Swarovski x5i instead of a better rifle for fox , deer and target
