Hi, I've used a guide518C for 4 or 5 years now. Brilliant bit of kit for sitting out around pens, or baiting foxes, anywhere in fact that you don't want to use a lamp. As for watching a field of geese, you would be able to see a fox sneaking around the field unless the geese were shoulder to shoulder and then I think the geese would let you know there was one there. I can see foxes at 1000 yds on the fells, but of course you do need a good night vision sight to finish the job. One thing that disappointed me a bit was the fact you can't pick out dead rabbits in stubble or long grass when picking up after shooting. If it's not in view you can't see through thick grass with it.

Really ? Mine's quite good at that, will spot dead uns in longish grass at 20 - 30 yds ish. Could just be that the grass isn't so dense round here maybe, or I'm taller so looking down more? (Perhaps)

The geese are in pens of 500 and they stick very close together after dark. If iam close enough I can hear if there's a fox about but iam talking about 30 or 40 acre fields.

Geese don't show out as well as a furred animal, probably due to heat placement, feathers I guess a fox stands out pretty well in amongst domestic geese, as another send the geese will lead you to the fox

I use the pulsar hd50 TI

I may try one. Don't need it very often as I normally know the exact pen where it will turn up, but last night I shot one from my tower at 1am and as it was still early I decided to have a drive around the other fields, I scanned a field with my nv spotter saw nothing, drove onto the field and flicked the lamp around and there was Charley eating a goose about 800 - 1000 yards away he didn't hang about he was gone at full speed.these foxes see very little light so the slightest flash and they are away.

you could be just as successful with a good nv scope

No you won't, nothing beats thermal for spotting. You can spot with thermal then can't see the damned things through nv, so you look through the thermal again and it's still there. This can go on several times until it either moves and nv spots it or you get fed up and move on

  • 2 months later...

I found the the TI a bit off putting on clarity at first compared to NV

But once you get used to the complete difference of TI and NV it will open up your world. TI is the best by far for spotting 100% the decent NV IMO is brilliant I use the pulsar N870 and the pair together TI as a spotter and the NV with range finder as well on the rifle are a deadly combination

My set up is brilliant it will be a while before I will be looking to upgrade
