kshooter
Has anyone had any experience using tru oil and can anyone tell me expected drying time per coat? Have done 2 coats of mildly thinned down coats and one neat coat, every coat is taking up to 2 days to dry, in a heated room, is this normal? Glenlivet
What finish are you applying it to? It usually dries within a couple of hours on the guns I put it on, all oil finish. If you apply on top of a lacquer finish I can imagine it not drying.
kshooter
Walnut stock, completely stripped to the wood, sanded ect, even sat it outside a couple hrs in sunshine today and no improvement, it just doesn't seem to want to dry properly, will check tomorrow but I know it's will have some streaky shiny buts not properly dry
vmaxphil
I've always found it dries very quickly couple of hours at most as said above

kshooter
Bloody annoying really I've done a small repair spent hours cleaning stock and chequering, hours sanding, walnut stain, thought the tricky bits were done, im very particular when I do a job like this it's very annoying 😠

I found a coat a day for a couple of weeks works well. And rub it in until you're hands are hot from friction. And give it a light rub over between coats with fine wire wool. I think that's all.... kshooter
Thanks mate,I'll abandon the current plan being it home 000 wool it down and do it in room temperature, hopefully I'll get a different result☺
Exudate
When I used it, the first coat took several days to dry, but subsequent coats were dry the next day. However, it'll take much longer to cure and harden. If you can still smell it, it hasn't cured properly.
kshooter
Yes the instructions says a week before the sheen and conditioner to take some shine off if u wish so I guess it needs to fully dry before fitting back onto the gun, ill update my findings in a day or 2, bring home leave it a day make sure what's on properly dry wool it down and apply a coat and see what happens, good to get opinions from people who have had previous experience with it
subsonicnat
Pin ***** the sealing silver cover, never open to the air,it will go off very fast.. Drip about 5 spots onto the wood, and rub it over very quickly, try not to go over it more than 2/3 times,Very quick strokes, otherwise you Will stretch the finish and Drag it.. 1000 wet dry for first 8/9 coats,,Always Rub under a running tap Very lightly. Flat Finish get back to 2 finger size 1500 to 2000,,very,very lightly.. Dry off with Cotton cloth ONLY.. Use fingers (2) all the time while applying it,JUST Enough to cover Stock,,Too much is not the way to go... The FINAL COATS will be rubbed with 2000 and very soft liquid soap,,(Not washing up liquid).. Hand type::::Wash traces of soap off.. The FINAL COAT LEAVE 2 DAYS IN COOL PLACE TO HARDEN.. VERY,,VERY GENTLY,TAKE OUT THE DUST NIBS,YOU MAY HAVE ON IT ONLY,,GENTLE SKIM PRESSURE ONLY.. POLISH Next Day with flat of hand,Depending on how you want the Finish is up to you.. It can be brought back to Flat look,or,Like looking through layer of water,,it looks Beautiful If done properly,,Time taken is what you get,,Rush it and you will struggle like hell.. Final word, your hand will feel sticky,,use baby powder to sprinkle on your hand to kill it,, Then wash normaly..Works very well,no need for rubber gloves either, they will tear the finish off.. Good Luck.. Edited September 23, 2016 by subsonicnat
