Penelope
We are looking to have a change from maize for a couple of our game covers for this season on my syndicate and are considering kale. What varieties have you gents on here used and anything else to consider with kale?
Konnie
Hi Penelope, Before you go down this route, make sure you have the plans in place to get it sprayed for flea beetle at short notice this may be required at least twice, failure to do so will make it hard to establish cover. Kale is by far the best crop for pheasants, imo. lot of seed merchants are very helpful and if you know soil type and conditions exposed/sheltered they will help with variety choice. kennett
Was just going to say the same about spraying, you need to be set up to spray as soon as the first signs of flea beetle appear, and it will more than once! Whilst I would love kale I just don't think it was worth the effort for the amount of times we shoot. If you want to go for a perrenial Kings do one called poacher leave it which has the potential to last years with minimal input other than topping after year 2 Edited March 5, 2017 by kennett
