Buying a gun overseas and importing

Recommended Posts

I have a question which I'm hoping that PW can help to shed some light on.

Whilst on holiday in Turkey last year I visited a gun shop and was amazed by the selection and quality of some of the shotguns. Turkish walnut is world renowned and the pricing was also exceptionally good. I'm off again this year and want to know what the legalities of bringing over a shotgun are?

According to gov.uk there are a few things that need to be in place for the import of a gun:

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/import-controls-on-offensive-weapons

So to break it down I believe the following are required:

  • the relevant import licence or certificate from the Department for International Trade (DIT)
  • Home Office permission for handguns, pistols, revolvers and automatic or semi-automatic firearms - Not required for a basic shotgun I believe
  • permission from your UK regional police authority for other firearms

If some of the above requirements are not too costly coupled with the cost saving on a new gun it may be worth it, but I'm interested to know from those that have either done this or can shed some light on it if its achievable.

Also there is the question of proofing. I assume that it will need to go through one of the UK proof houses.

As Turkey are ouside the EU, you would also have to pay VAT and because it over £135, import duty as well. I think it would work out just as cheap to source it from a UK gun importer, find the model you are looking for and source it in the UK then workout what it'll cost to import it.

You'd be surprised at the cost differences, once the UK importer & subsequent RFD have added their margins!

Massive savings to be made, even with Duty & VAT to add....plus the bonus of buying at source from a much wider choice of models.
