Columba palumbus
Nothing gives a scrap like a good barbel it will snag you like no other fish given the chance they have a big wide tail that can exert power like no other fish including sea trout and salmon.
Jonnyni
 Can't argue cause I've never caught one but do the not tend to give up after a 'short' fight like most other course fish. Bet they don't taste like a Sea Trout/Salmon
TROUT POUT
Which method do they fight best on??quiver tip, lure, fly or maggot drowning???never caught one either would like to though
red_stag88
Doubt you'll catch barble on either lure or fly, unless you trundle a soft bait slug, or worm along the river's bottom.
Fisherman Mike
Have caught Plenty of Big Barbel from The Bristol Avon, Wye, and Kennet plus a couple of big fish from the upper Thames. Your quite right Columba they put up one hell of a scrap, particularly in strong running water. I have caught a 8lb barbel on the same rod which I caught an 8 lb salmon worming on the Wye in 85, a john wilson 11/4 lb avon. No doubt in my mind that the Barbel had the edge. incidently both went back
