deny essex
I remember seeing a program on tv many years ago on how homing pigeon find their way back to their loft. They followed some after release in a helicopter or plane, cant remember which with a infra red camera. It showed the birds general'y following tree and hedge lines, power lines and land infra red signatures and added that with the self compassing nature of most birds they were able to map out their area and direction back to base. No idea if it has been proven but in my 30 years of shooting have noticed at times in real cold winter winds the pigeon like us shelter land and feed away from the cold in the leeward side of hedges or depressions in field's etc away from the cold north winds. Relevant or not it was an interesting program.
