Sussex Countryman
Has anyone got any good tips for touching up the usual nicks and chings to the blueing or blacking on a s/h shottie, esp getting best possible match to original? Has anyone any experience of Birchwood Casey gun blue touch up pen please? Thanks all. Sx Ctymn
mry716
Yes they are fine for minor scratches but the secret is de-greasing properly first. Even clean washed hands on the spot would stop the acid from working to full efficiency. Pop into the chemists and get a bottle of 'Denatured Alcohol' that will act as the best de-greaser you can buy without a licence of one sort or another. use a clean tissue and don't touch it where you put the alcohol and do it 4-5 times each time with a new tissue then use the pen. Bazooka Joe
SC I've used Birchwood Casey on two rifles & they come up well, also used them for the wood, makes a gun look like new, just have to keep on top of them. I would suggest doing the whole gun instead of patching it up. Stick to the instructions, & take heed of what MRY says, or you'll just waste your time. BJ. Floating Chamber
I use Hoppes, but degreasing is the secret. I use 'Wynnes' as a degreaser. I turned a Winchester Model 50 (in the white from over 50 years of wear) to a deep rich blue in an hour. Beaut! PS Finishing oil is important, too!
