JDog
Two weeks ago we were at Lincoln Cathedral for a performance by the Lincolnshire Choral Society and an accompanying orchestra. The theme was the first world war and music by Haydn. The architecture and music were equally marvellous. This evening we were in Gloucester Cathedral for a performance by the Gloucester Cathedral Choir performing Russia Choral Music. Again the music and architecture were mesmerising. Most of the assembled had their eyes closed but they were not asleep. The sounds were too good to miss. It is good sometimes to broaden ones horizons. figgy
Some of the acoustics in these buildings is amazing with the large organs and the pure clear voices of the singers. My wife and I were at Durham Cathedral at Easter weekend last year and sat and listened for nearly an hour to the full choir. Then again at York Minster later the same year at both we had no idea there would be anything on but we both enjoyed it. Wouldnt mind going to an evening event in the future. buze
I'm a life member of the Friend of St Georges Chapel (Windsor) -- and I'm... and atheist! However the building, history and acoustics is worth putting some effort into. I once was lucky enough to sit at the back of the organ chair for a recital -- it was absolutely amazing. I'm not *super fond* of the choir-style music, as usualy the music is quite 'simplistic', but for the odd organ only recital, it's quite an experience.
