dazzyboi
Im going to tenerife in a few weeks time with me and the misses, we have found what looks like a respectable 5* diving centre near our resort of Playa Las America's Linky below: http://www.aqua-marina.com/ none of us are certified divers, and i think there is not much point in me doing certified training because come on...when am i going to go diving in the UK? and its not often i go on holiday! i was thinking of doing the Discover Diving package which includes pool training, theory then off on a boat for a dive.. Just wondering if anybody on here has done this sort of thing whilst on holiday and what did they think...how long was the first dive for? and how deep did you go? Dr W
I did my 3 day open water cert in Bourneo last year, awesome experience and would definietly recommend, as this means you can then get straight on it again on future holidays. Generally you go down to 18 meters with Open Water. When I went to the maldives in March I did my Advanced Cert which was bloody brilliant swimming with sharks, dolphins, turtles etc. With the Advanced you can go down to 30 meters. Having said all that I think your plan to do the discover course first is the way to go. Me and the gf tried it first this way, I loved it and was hooked and gf didn't like it. It's a great way to find out if it's for you without wasting money on a 3 day course. I think with these discover courses you have to stick with an instructor at all times and you'll probably go down to about 5m which while doesn't sound much is quite deep enough for your first time. As for how long the boat dive will last depends on yourselves and how comfortable you feel, probably 30 mins or so as you'll find you use a lot more air when you're learning as you're not as relaxed but also depends on your body size and other things. vole
Good points there.I did my PADI open water when working in Saudi but could not be bothered to progress further.Have clocked 105 dives tho.Would you be interested in saving your holiday as a holiday and getting your cert before you go?There are loads of good centres to train you.The price is usually similar,no language barrier hopefully and you will be more certain they are reputable.Go on holiday with your ticket and Wey hey!The dive leader/master will look after novice divers. It is a great sport.I love the Red sea and a dive trip there on the reefs can be had for not much £$$.Good luck and enjoy. Good advice from Vole21. Do the Discover Diving course on holiday, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Then if you decide to take up diving take a course in the UK. I've been diving for over 20 years, and still can never understand how these overseas dive centres can claim to teach you how to dive in three days. Here we will teach you how to dive, not just how to pass a dive test. It will probably be run over a few weeks, with many pool sessions and at least three open water sessions, plus exams. You'd be surprised how much there is to see whilst diving in and around the UK.
chrismpullbang
I did a discover diving package at the same place a few years back. If you're sure that you aren't likely to want to do a further course then I would go for this. I ended up doing my advanced open water course last year due to doing the discover diving course as I loved it so much. As its a discover diving package i have been told that due to the padi and other international laws the deepest you can go is 8m and the longest you can go down at this depth with air is aobout 1.5hours (dont quote me) on my discover diving package we were down for 45 mins. If you want to go for a longer dive times an idea would be the base certified diving package. you will be able to go deeper and for longer with only a little classroom time. I've been a BSAC Dive Leader for many years now and have dived all over the world (forces life does still have some benefits but UK diving is by far the most challenging and varied. Get trained, get a dry suit and get in there.
