Fitsy
Hi all Just wondering if a 8x8 field brooder house big enough to house 500 pheasent chick right up to 6-7 weeks or would I need to build a 12×12 for the extra room? ☺
moongeese
I would put 350 into an 8 x8 shed. you would be better for the bigger size. Its ok when they are tiny, but they need more space as they grow.
Fitsy
12×12 would be suitable ?
scotslad
I take it u have a massive outside run and night shelter too?? I'm mibee wrong but the way i'm reading it ur expecting 500 poults to survive in just the brooders hut till 6 weeks We used to put 500 in 8x8 huts, but initially u need to make hut smaller for a few days with caedboard so nearer the heat. Ur getting late for this season and the cold night temps and shorts days will effect ur birds growth
Fitsy
No birds this time of year Getting set up for next year and yes will have a night shelter and run ..just wanted to know A bit of info on brooder size so I don't regret in making it too small if I ever was to go up to 500 birds in the future. . scotslad
Spot on then,, no we used to put 500 in the brooders, just mind plenty of ventilation holes. Know someone who suffcated all his chicks in a big super duper insulated hut with no vents 12x12 would be an ackward size to lift/make (timber sheets are 8x4) which makes them an easy size, u could always have 2 brooder huts if u wanted to expand in future. But a bigger night shelter and bigger run with cover in it will make more difference to the birds than a bigger brooder hut
Fitsy
Good thinking ..you could right 12×12 bit big to handle and lift as I will be on my own to wrestle with it 8x8 for the time being and see what happens if things increase in future ☺ Edited August 13, 2018 by Fitsy
Paul223
12x12 is far better, I have 4 of them and 2 8x8. 500/700 in a 12x12 is easy and comfortable without undue stress. 300 in 8x8. Both use similar amounts of gas! The 12x12 are set up together, so actual size is 12x24 (plus night shelters), if you’re building your own then make them 8 and 6 foot panels for easy handing.
