Hi,

Not put a post on for a while as Spencer has been comming on well, retreiving from water, stopping to the whistle, directional retreiving, is alert to the gun, wont chase rabbits,He reacts fine when on the extendable lead, but the thing that grips my **** is his slow response when i call him to me (fine when retreivng), he takes at least two sets of double pips of the whistle, and calling his name, telling him to Heel up! which he plods up to me, sometimes strolling past, How can i get him to return with some enthusiasum! for his next command?

NTTF, Mr & Mrs Sweepy have you come across this before?

Get on his case the moment he ignores you, don't stand there blowing the whistle until he does something.

Try it at short distance or using a long line, the split second he ignores you get down on him and make him come to you. This may sound harsh but it is not meant to be, it is meant to reinforce the command.

cheers martin,

If he isnt on a lead he will legg it a short distance away, he is 9 months now (LAB) will he grow out of it?

cheers Ratus.

Are you a Mersey wildFowler?

No,

I am a MERSEA wildfowler.

Christ at 9 months old you are expecting far too much, I know the **** about labs being born half trained but there is no need to rush anything, just reinforce your command if he ignores you.

Ratus,

Sounds like you are doing very well with him, and that his traiing is looking very good for this fall. Very well done.

It also sounds like you stood still while teaching him the recall command, and like you are standing still now everytime you give it. To put more snap into it start on the flexi...retractable lead...... since he knows the whistle command use it instead of the voice. Give the command, and a pop on the flexi at the same time. As soon as he is moving towards you start to jog backwards and give praise the whole way in...lots of good boys, thata puppy.......when he is within 3 feet of you stop and give him a treat when he sits. Give treats everytime for 2 weeks and then start to wean them off to one every 3 or 4 recalls. Be sure to work this exercise for 3 to 4 weeks and in all sorts of cover, right from cut grass to field conditions.

What this exercise does is delivers the command through the whistle and the pop.........the backing up uses the dogs prey drive to push him towards you ......while the praise keeps him focused on you. Remember 70% of an exercise is the praise, 5% of an exercise is the timing, and 25% is the correction.

After 4 weeks work the exercise off lead, once again starting on cut grass and moving forward through all types of cover. Be sure to have each cover type mastered before moving forward. Be sure to move backwards for the first 6 or so and then start to stand still for some....about every 4th one or so and slowly increase the number that you stand still for. If you have a problem....he ignores a whistle, then go out and get him with your slip lead. Put the lead on him and give the command back and jog back wards and pop the lead back to where you blew the whistle.....obviously keep the distances short in the beginning. When he is reliably coming in you will be able to stand still. I like to give treats throughout the whole training, but I bring it down to one or two while out after the exercise is established.

No worries,

I just thought that maybe you are a poacher, (sorry colchester wildfowler) who was on a wind up.

HA HA, I'm a Colchester Wildfowler, & Colchester Garrison member, I know you lads in Mersea have a problem with map reading and sometimes wander across to our marshes. (joke)!

Oh dear I feared you might be,

Us mersea lads do not have a problem with map reading we know exactly where we are.

Unless I am very much mistaken most of your marsh surrounds mersea which sort of makes it ours by default. You are more than welcome to come out with us and shoot your marshes if you like, we'll show you the best bits.

hi neighbour

how are things in your part of colchester.we know how you feel .like you we are new to this dog training thing to and mr sweepy is having a hell of a time with hes springer .out of the two dogs that we got she was always the better dog (we also got sammy the clumber )but since shes had her first season she has turn into a typical teenager.the similarity between her and my 13 year old son are unbelievable.she wants to stay in her bed all day .plus she takes no notice when you tell her to do something .mind you she do clean herself .i hate to think the last time my son used soap.anyway you are not alone .but like i keep telling mr you have got to keep positive it will right it self in the end .me and sammy are prove of that .mind you it do help that the clumber is slower on hes feet then the springer and i can out run him .am sure the springer must have a bit of greyhound in it .and poor mr sweepy being a smoker has not got a hope in hell of keeping up with her when she takes off .anyway best of luck with him . and when you are having problems with him just remember on the other side of colchester their is a springer/racehorse being chase by a man who really should cut down on hes tobacco intake xxxx suzy

Mrs Sweepy

HI Glad to hear sammy is comming on well, thanks for your re-assuring words, i dont even bother chasing my hound, but when i collar him its getting pretty emotional carrying an almost 30kg Lab by the scruff, back to where he last ignored a command! we know fridaywoods like the back of our hand/paw now.

Got plenty of time to train this little oik, as i'm not deploying to old Afghan, so mrs Ratus wont be getting her little claws on me dog!

good luck with the springer, Yeah its ok over this side they have cut the grass so mr rabbitt is in full veiw, but i've managed to keep spencer under control which is a another tick in the box! take care Ratus
