Gonna Shoot a Wabbit
Hi all. Have been doing battle with the welsh fox population on one of our permissions. The week before last we got a 3/4 grown cub. YTS trainee and i were calling in a silage field when we spotted a pair of eyes in the woodland fringe 150yds away. It wouldn't come to the call and only responded to my vixen yelp. So we walked it up to 50yds and i again gave the vixen yelp only this time not quite so loudly and back to the edge of the wood it came. At 30yds it came to the fenceline and stopped, just as the lamp started to dim (OH ****!!) battery going!. Kneeling shot, blowing a gale and scope still on full mag (Doh' still got alot to learn) and an orange blur in scope, fox about to leg it as i fired!! solid hit but fox still twitching so gave it second shot after winding scope down to low mag for clear sight picture. WON'T FORGET THAT AGAIN, RUDDY PILLOCK!! Not text book stuff But one dead fox. If it could go wrong that night it chuffin' did..... Following week dead eye duck and i are on same farm only he is on rifle this time so not expecting any mistakes. We walked the whole farm before heading back to the silage field where i succeded (just) last week. I started calling and we spotted a fox 200yds away to our left and coming along fenceline. Problem was silage still knee high so spotting fox difficult. True to form it managed to get downwind of us before we spotted it in the silage and away it went (Oh ****) we followed its escape direction but to no avail. So we continued calling from original point, mixing squeals with vixen yelps when 250yds away in next field two pairs of eyes appear. After confirming they are foxes with aid of bino's tried without success to call 'em in and again responded only to vixen call (possibly cubs again). We decided to walk the field up to the fenceline and try from there so hugging the hedge off we went and upon arrival at the top of the field a low vixen yelp and on went the lamp. 1st fox at 90yds looking at dead eye duck who leaning on fencepost knocked it over cleanly with .223. At the shot the second fox ran left. i tracked it with the lamp and another vixen yelp stopped it. Alas it stepped forward as the shot was fired resulting in a miss. as i collected the shot fox, i again gave a few minutes calling and yelping when again on the woodland fringe appeared fox no2.... No mistake this time off the bipod at 110yds and No2 in the bag. Take my hat off to mr duck excellent first shot and not his fault he missed with the second. Called it a night after showing farmer the slain who was chuffed to bits at another 2 removed from her land as she had seem them around her goose pen that week. Doesn't always go according to plan this foxing lark but i suppose they haven't survived for this long by being stupid!! It was the vixen yelp made all the difference lately glad i learned! cubs were almost full grown and ready to wreak havoc! will try to post the pic hope it works. Dead-Eyed Duck
I hate shooting off a post, and was pleased to get the first. 2nd was easy. We shoot a lot of foxes on this small hill farm as the lady farmer insists on keeping free range geese (for the Xmas trade) in an area surrounded by forest. Last year she lost 8 goslings in one night - the fox removed the heads of them all, and dragged one off. The foxing is doing well so far this year - shot another couple of cubs after this pair - they were easy 75-80 yards shots again off a post. After shooting the first the other just stood there for a 2nd easy shot. Gonna Shoot a Wabbit has developed into a really good caller after several years - at first the foxes that we shot stood there in disbelief at the weird wails and squeeks he was making, and he used to have sore handy pandies through sucking on them :good: Don
