Ballie
Anyone got any links to wildcat .20 cals, and has anyone used them for foxes? I have heard that some wildcats .20's are shooting 40g at 4200fps and killing foxes out to 600 yards!
mry716
You will do a great deal better using your 243 for fox and the 20 cal for rabbits out to 250ish yds. If you want a longer range rifle then look to a larger cal. 25 upwards.
loopy bunny blaster
i wouldn't shoot at fox's at 600yards with ANY rifle.
stevethevanman
Even if you can group 1/4 of an inch at 100yds your group will still be massive at 600yds and with the light bulets they will loose there power faster than heavier bullets in larger cals. loopy bunny blaster
there are military snipers that can hit a man in the head from 1200yards away with a .50 cal rifle, but they are exeptional shooters and have the correct gun for the job, a .20 bullet is just TOO small for fox at 600 yards

Ballie
Thanks for your comments, I was not intending to shoot foxes at 600 yards with any cal, the longest I have shot a fox (with my .243) is just less than 300 yards and that was a very long way at night. But as you might know from my other post I am considering having a custom rifle built, I know the spec I want its just the cal I am having second thoughts on. I was going to have it made in .243 Ackley but Steve Bowers of Specialist Rifles Services suggested I look at .20 cal and I just wanted to ask on PW what people thought of them. .20 does seem a bit small to me and it would seem you all agree therefore I will either keep my .243 Ackley idea or I am also considering 22-250 Ackley anyone on here shoot a 22-250 Ackley? I would love to know what people think of that cal

I would love to know what people think of that cal Try a 6mm PPC or 6mm Br if you are going custom - both are super accurate rifles - with a little time spent you can put bullet on bullet at 100yrds no problem - i have shot a 6ppc quite a few times and the 6mm br once and with both rifles i can get a clover group at 100 yrds and i'm not the best shot by any means. Sako7mm
Ballie, give me a couple of weeks and I should be able to let you know what I think of 20-250, with a 1 in 9 twist barrel for 50 grain Bergers....
High Desert Hunter
I have hit coyotes at better than 400 yards, and put them right down, that was shooting 55gr soft points from my 22-250, if I had a 1:9 twist, I believe I would give 60gr bullets a try. I know some chaps here who shoot AR15s with a 1:7 twist, and are shooting sub-moa at 600 yards with 75gr match bullets. The 243 with the right bullet would most certainly kill a fox at 600 yards, but you would need a drop table, and a good scope to be able to compensate for the bullet drop and drift. I have no experience with the 20 cals, I do know some people who are shooting the 204 Ruger, and they seem to be very pleased with the cartridge. stevethevanman
most people only really ever shoot vermin out to at the most 300yds, very rarely should I imagin that shots 400+yds are taken, you can get them very easily into normal ranges i.e. -250yds with baiting, I dont really see the need for a custon rifle, exept for target shooting accuracy, vermin is very shootable with a standard of the shelf gun out to 300yds If you do your part, once you get out to say around the 400yds way, I should imagin that you need to start looking at specialist calibers and homeloading unless you find some factory stuff that will shoot good enough for a clean kill at the ranges you are talking about, but you are looking at inches of wind drift alone. High Desert Hunter
Another thing to keep in mind is your projectile type, here where I live, ricochet is not a real issue, but unless you are using a fairly frangible bullet, once the ranges get long, and the velocities start to really drop off, many bullets will fail to expand. It can be tough if you are rolling your own, you have to pick one that will stand up to the velocity you are shooting, yet still get reliable expansion once the speed drains off. john faul
your better off with a 223 and keep the range under 300 yards surely you can get foxes in this close

No offence intended, but you've been posting for advice about your first rifle in the last week or so, and now you're dishing out advice on a thread about wildcat .20 calibres? Have you shot many foxes with a rifle?
