lofty2
Hello, I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice on the application process for a shotgun certificate - the difference for me being that I do not plan (at this time) on purchasing or owning a shotgun. I would like to obtain a SGC to allow me to rent guns from the Clay Pigeon Shooting School I am a member of. Do I still need to make arrangements for storing a gun should I decide to buy one (which I won't within the next 12 months)? Thanks a lot for your comments, Lofty
garyb
Yes - I believe you will still need to meet all the current home office requirements.
ph5172
Yes you would have to have all the correct cabinet and checks done - As a shooting ground they will have dispensation to allow you to use a club gun so a license shouldn't be a problem. If it is then try looking around most grounds are beginner helpful and i assume you are shooting with someone who owns their own guns. If they moan ask them how many people rent guns as i bet 99% of people that have a certificate own their own gun so i guess the rental department is not that busy!!! though saying that i have known licences to be granted without the cabinet inspected and only when the notification of purchase was recieved the checks were made. Ring the FLO and ask him, he should know. Update your location and i will see if i can dig out the tel number

garyb
I'd buy before and have it installed ready for the visit - Saves them having to come back to check it, and therefor delaying you getting a ticket. I obviously don't know your personal circumstance's, but there shouldn't be many reasons why you are turned down.

lofty2
Excellent, Thank you all for your replies and comments! In answer to your question (ph5172) I live in Berkshire, which I believe is covered by Thames Valley Police. As I suspected, I shall probably have to look into purchasing a gun cabinet. Does anyone have any recommendations? Also, am I correct in saying that Shotgun Cartridges do not need to be locked up? However, whatever the answer, I think I would like to keep them secure, are the gun cabinets with a separate lockers above for ammunition big enough for storing a reasonable quantity of shotgun cartridges? Thanks again and happy shooting!

But it's a good idea to keep them out of sight and children / the wife

pin
Don't go overboard with the storing of carts, they are pretty harmless without the shotgun to fire them. Take one bit of advice, buy a large cabinet. One with a locking top. You don't know it yet but you will fill it, and you'll want your FAC within a year. Get the largest you have space for

Get the largest you have space for Sounds like an excellent piece of advice to me! Once I had resolved myself to the idea of purchasing a gun cabinet, I had decided to go for the SL5+ 4/5 Gun with 203mm Internal Locking Top. However, after that piece of advice I think I shall go for the RL5+ 4/5 Rifle with 203mm Internal Locking Top. I assume that this will hold a normal shotgun properly (even though it is designed for scoped rifles) Does anyone know where a good supplier of these is; so far I have found the RL5+ for £164.50, can anyone better this? Thanks again for all the help Gents.
ritz
BAH! what a pain, I wasn't sure on the gun safe issue... and didn't think about it untill I read this thread... My house isn't really equiped for a gun safe.. i.e. I would have to bury it in the back yard to make room for it...since the wife MOST probably won't take too kindly to me taking up some of her wardrobe space for a big metal box where a gun goes in... damnit.. seems like I might have to wait a while to own a gun *sob* Thinking about applying for the licence as well, but this puts a massive bolder in the way of those plans ! garyb
It doesn't have to go in the wardrobe. Mines bolted to a wall in the office, but as it's out of sight and passing traffic its fine.

Mines bolted to a wall in the office, but as it's out of sight and passing traffic its fine. hmmm.... I Would have to get a smaller comptuer table to fit it in, bought a newly built house and their idea of a "3rd bedroom" and my idea of a broom closet is one and the same thing... so having a double sized computer table with 2 PC's and the wife's second wardrobe in there doesn't leave much room for safe's, BUT I think you have a point I might be able to get that in there... Does it need to be bolted to the wall or something? since I have a newly built house all the internal walls are plasterboard...
njc110381
ritz. I'd say that if the mrs can have a 2nd wardrobe, you also have the right to have one. Your second wardrobe (gun safe) will be smaller than hers, so how can she complain??? Who wears the trousers in your house? Lay down some ground rules man

B) Anyone have any idea if the safe HAS to be bolted down? I still cant see the use in bolting it to a plasterboard wall... ?
crisis500
I had my visit last week and had my licence approved the only thing is i have to wait 8 weeks for my ticket!!!!!! I decided to order the RL5+ in the end so i could line all my guns up (OCD friendly), also got the one with the locking box just in case i decide to apply for fire arms. Mines going to end up in a cloak room bolted to an external wall. Maybe they should you should write into the bbc and proposal a new tv series (its me or the gun safe)
