Raife89
Good evening, What is the best way to shoot a coastal river? I’m on the river Taw which is particularly abundant in Wigeon a convenient 5 min drive from work. However I’ve been a few times and they are either always on the edge of the water or a few meters close to it. The issue arises, by the 100m off open mudflat between the nearest cover and the waters edge. Meaning any approach closer than say 70m has them flying to the other side of the estuary. Other ducks do come further to the cover, but they mostly shell ducks that can’t be shot. I’m a complete wildfowler novice so my question is this. Is there a way to decoy them to attract them closer to cover, I.e. away from the waters edge? Aside from going to another Marsh, or building a hide that would spend 12hrs a day submerged and would need a covered approach to I can’t see any other options. flippermaj
I have never been there but watching Chris greens videos of the area he decoys the Chanel that runs along the marsh and shoots the tide up?

Sundodger
Get down there 2/3 hrs before high tide, set up a hide and put some decoys out, just wait and see what happens, or go down there for morning or evening flight. You need to put some hrs in to find the flight lines and roosting areas.
misser
Sundodger is spot on...the only way to find out is to try things...ie bit of a hide and a few deeks...try different places maybe where a decent creek runs in and set up near point...can't beat getting out and trying things its the only way to learn....even if you blank it doesn't matter because you're learning all the time then next time try something different.....success will come if you put the time in...atb...misser
