Stealth Stalker
Not really a sporting picture, but here goes. Whilst on a walking holiday in Devon near the village of Moretonhampstead, I spotted in the grass the antlers of a roe deer about 25 yds from the path we were on, it seemed oblivious to us & on closer inspection it got up & was in a great deal of distress, very unstable, frothing from the mouth & falling over. It looked like the rear left leg was broken, I was unsure what to do, so went looking for a farmer to inform him of the whereabouts of the poor beast. There was no one about at the nearest farm, I could not just walk away leaving the poor thing in the state it was in, now lying on its side legs flailling & gasping for breath, I was just about to try & break its neck when there was one heavy breath then nothing On closer inspection the rear left leg was broken but seemed to have been a long term injury, there was a lot of calcium build up around the break, on the whole it looked quite healthy though. I was contemplating slinging it over my shoulders & taking it back to the car, but we had to walk through the center of town back to the motor & the Mrs thought we might get some strange looks from the locals on a Sunday lunchtime So I settled for one of the antlers for a stick top Full size pic with a bottle for scale Close up of the head All in all not a very nice sight to see, my Mrs was almost in tears seeing the distress of the poor thing And she called me a sick B*******D when I snapped the antler off On the walk back to the car I bumped in to Flash off here & informed him of the location so he could go & stock up his freezer SS
al4x
I'd be tempted not to put that one in the freezer. If the break was old and the deer doesn't look that mal nourished you have to question what was it that killed it. Frothing at the mouth etc may be an indicator of some form of poisoning or illness rather than it being down to the break as calcium deposits etc do take a few weeks to appear. Devilishdave
I would not recomend eating such a beast it could have a whole host of things wrong with it at least septiscemia if not somting a little worse. Dave
