henry d
I`m about to start on the exterior of the house and we have some galvanized steel panels which I am stripping. My Q`s are, do I sugar soap them after ? What kind of primer do I use, if any ? The filling where the panels meet brickwork will be replaced, should I just use the silicone rubber stuff or other ?? ?? Many thanks for any replies. Axe
If you use silicone fillers make sure you paint first as it will react with wet paint.
Drovers
I've painted Galvanized metal ...and it all came straight off.... 2nd attempt after stripping was to use special primer for Galvanized metal, called an etching primer. This worked fine but was expensive...cos I bought from that Nice DIY chain B&...massive QUEUE at checkout! Regards Drovers
Fisherman Mike
After the cleaning of the panels wash them down with a Mordant Solution and use a non ferrous Primer. I suggest an etching metal primer or resin based acrylic high build primer Ask your local Decorators Merchants. Do you have a Crown decorators Merchants near you. ?? If the abutment is to existing Brickwork and the panels are corrugated ( probably a 3ins profile between peaks in the corrugations or 76.2mm to be precise) I would buy some preformed flashing pieces, they are normally a standard pattern with an attached upstand. Other wise use a product called Flashband which is a self adhesive aluminium coated flashing.... be careful cus its bloody sticky. This needs to be fixed after painting and is good for about 15 years.... Good luck... hope its stays fine while you do it ! FM
Guest stiv24
If you try to paint onto galv metal you first need to apply an etching acid. This will dull the metal from a brightish silver colour to a dull dark colour. Any good quality metal primer will then be ok. For small quantities of acid visit your local forge or blacksmith with an empty houshold cleaner spray bottle and ask then to fill it up, most will for the cost of a few pints.
