Tarka
Took a few photos at work today thought some of you may like to see This is a little shelter pen and run i built to put our white poults in to harden them off and stop getting pecked. Having a bit of trouble with rats digging and lost 2 to rats so far. Got some tunnel traps running around it though! This is some of our poults on the feed track coming into the whistle on the afternoon feed on one part of the shoot. Wasnt a very good fed so there is no where near enough birds as what there usually is. These are some of the tunnel traps im running at the moment because a family of stoats was seen crossing the road pretty close to one of our pens! Tarka
thats a good course, very similar to the countryside management course. My younger brother done the game and wildlife course, finished this year, and is now living in belgium as an underkeeper. we both done different courses and got the same jobs! v-max
Hello nice pic's do you know to put a caught stoat/weasle in the back of the trap for better success. We used to spray the white poult's with a green spray like you get for feather-pecking.We also had a wee single plough & set the section's in that & back filled will the turff.Bird's look well keep us posted on them & the job's can be good when you take into account the house/council-tax/heating/ etc & when you have kid's family working tax credit's etc is good too to bump the wage all the best with it all & good luck. digger
Good pics and post Tarka, I wish you ( and beatingisbest & youngairgunner ) all the best. I was at Sparsholt over twenty years ago doing the gamekeeping course. Last night I was explaining to my daughters a year in the life of a gamekeeper, from rearing onwards and whistling the birds to feed, your photos have helped prove I wasnt making it up ! Stick with it and you will have the best vocation in the world. I didnt and curse myself for it. Do me a favour when at Sparsholt ? If they still do the rugby match against the fish keeping course ( the salmon sh*****s ), make sure you beat the hell out of them ! Good luck to all three of you

digger
For my sins I left gamekeeping after only a couple of years. Head keepers daughter was too fine to resist If I can only offer you one piece of advise on your chosen career it is this ; You will need three types of dog, terriers, gundogs and a mean as hell alsation. The first two are obvious, the third will be the best defence against poachers you could wish for. Go for a black one for obvious reasons. v-max
Hello i am in SCOTLAND & did college up here both at Elmwood & thurso & have strugled to obtain a full time position iv been ****** about & used.I have done lowground right out to the scottish highland's & just got got screwed by my mate of 10/11yrs on a grouse job & now at college retraining.I am well known in my area for my knowledge/experiance etc but cant get a full time job any whare.I was mad on vermin & still am but was taught to use fenn trap's & learn there target quarry as the will be my asset for life.Like a fox a stoat/weasle will enter a trap with more conviction & trust with a dead pal at the back of it even better in summer the female & rub her round the trap.Keep your fox carcase & put it in a midden as a fox will come in with more trust. If you have any question's feel free to ask.
