new to the flock
Catroof, Is this puppy crate trained? Does he have the run of the house? Is he using the same spot each time? How often do you get him out? At 3 months he is more than old enough to be house trained. The longer this takes to fix the more you are training him to go in the house. Try to give me alittle more information and I will see if I can help you out. Does he go after feeding, drinking, play? Is it through the night? catroofel
i don't know wot you mean about crate trained never herd that term before!! he has the run of down stairs only. the back door is open allday and we have a sizable garden which he is free to roam in. he does this but then goes in the house to do his business. i walk him for around 30-40 minutes each evening when i come in from work. never the same spot it varies. he understands he is diong wrong though as he runs (tail between his legs) outside as soon as he has done it. i aquired him from some people better known as travellers i think and he was kept in a stable perhaps this is the problem as he was able to go when and where he liked?? there is no routine as to when he does it i suppose when he feels like he needs to go. hope this gives you more info and that you can help cheers!! new to the flock
Catroof, How old was he when you got him? Crate training is when you teach the dog to stay inside a small kennel...big enough for him to stand turn around and laydown in.....when you are not with him. It has many useful links such as house training, vet visits, travel etc. I have an idea for you but just want the above info first. new to the flock
catroof, It is my feeling that your pup is confused as to where he is to do his business. Being 3 plus months and never having had it taught to him that it is an outside requirement either from the people you bought him from or correctly from you. You now face a bit of a problem because you need to set up some rules and boundries and untrain what has been unintentionally trained. The best way to go about this is going to be to crate train him and house break him at the same time. You will need a small very kennel or wire crate. As said before big enough for him to stand up turn around and lay down comfortably in. Do not get a big one as this will just intice him to start messing in the crate. The first couple of times in he will howl and carry on when he is placed left on his own in there especially at night. When he is making noise do not go near him or let him out . If you do you will have let him win and it will create a whole new set of problems. Once you have his crate, to start open the door throw a treat in and tell him to kennel up. Close the door let him eat the treat and reopen the door and let him out. Pepeat this a dozen times or so. This will start to associate the crate with being a good place.....his safe haven. Never use the crate as a punishment. He will need to sleep in the crate at night, and be in the crate if you are not with him through the day. For the house breaking, you will need to pay close attention to him while he is out with you. If he has awoke from a nap, had a drink or feed, had a play session, or has not been out with you for 1/2 an hour to 45 minutes put him on a lead take him out and tell him go pee. If he comes out of his crate put him on lead an immediately take him out and tell him go pee. As soon as he pees or makes a mess praise him and make a fuss over him, you can even give him a treat. If you catch him making a mess in the house you can give a stern NO and light scruff and immediately get him out on a lead and tell him go pee...be sure to praise if he does. If he makes a mess in the house and you dont catch him you can not scold him As you have basically 8 seconds from the time an offence occurs to correct or the dog does not associate the two incidenses. In most cases when a pup has been allowed to develope the problem you have it takes a week to 2 weeks to retrain into a fully house broke dog. Hope this helps, if you have any further questions, or need futher help please do not hesitate to ask. NTTF

bernie garland
i like new to the flock always crate train them as they wont do the biz in the crate, take him out last thing at night then straight in the crate, then in the morning straight outside to do the biz, then plenty of praise, but make sure the crate is only big enough to turn round in,this method has never failed me yet.just trained my lurcher pup briar in a couple of days, hope this helps. bernie

BSA Shaun
Told you someone on here would give you the solution mate. Some sound advice there, you'll just have to convince the missus not to keep pampering him all the time

bernie garland
she is coming round now mate coz i started building a kennel in the gardenthats her crate trained as well coz she don't want him outside once he's trained to the crate always let him out to do the biz, then when you have to go to work or out, back in the crate and let him out on your return, to do the biz. think a bout it would you do the biz in your bed, after a few days they will know the crack, plenty of praise though and the'll do it for the fuss again hope this helps bernie
