Ultrastu
.177 all the way . Get him a tin of flat head pellets for his gun They should shoot well enough when practicing in the garden or down the farm .they are cheap and being flat bosh tins about nicely . Also they have a low bc.which means they shed speed quickly .given this and the light weight .it means if the worst should happen and maybe a pellet goes somewhere it shouldn't then the damage from a .177 flat head will be much less than say a med weight. 22 . If he wants to hunt with his gun later a decent round head pellet will be perfect for any quarry you want to target .
Ultrastu
.177 Rws - hobby , co2 pell , geco Bisley practice . Crosman verminpell Or my fave flat head is the airarms match at 8 grns its quite heavy for a flat head and a bit more expensive than most but the accuracy of them even at 50 yds is amazing .I even shoot them a 960 fps and they hold a group at 30 yds .
