Mungler
Could someone give me a quick idiots guide to Gen 1 Nightvision and in particular does anyone has any knowledge or experience of the Paladin NV scope - is it any good, any best setup tips and recommended operation etc. E.g. use a spotter scope as well or a NV monocular etc etc. Gen 2 is out of the budget so no advice along the lines of "Give Gen 1 a swerve and buy Gen 2" Also looking for a laser illuminator if anyone has one kicking around (come on, check deep down the back of the sofa). Ta very, M Gen 1 is only really suitable for air rifle work mung. Do a extra shift or two and get a gen 2 and send a pm to patsmash as he is doing very well on the NV front at the moment. JohnGalway
BBS has a dedicated Nightvision section. A number of fellas on there using the Cobra Gen 1 add on system (and other types), can't say how good/bad it is though as I've never seen one, but, they are planning Nightvision meet ups so that may interest ya. Mungler
Okay, for a .22LR I was looking into Gen 1 (Paladin) but with a laser illuminator. I have made a purchase and am continuing to conduct general enquiries and will revert shortly

tulkyuk
Mung, if you do get a Gen 1, make sure you buy a good external IR for it as this will give you a lot better range.

chunk
I`ve got gen 1 on my 597. You do need additional illumination. I have a yukon ir torch on mine, and find it effective to shoot to about 50yds, but the furthest shot i have taken is about 60yds(paced out). The unit i have is an ATN 330, which is a dedicated system, rather than an add on. In use, i carry a monocular. Scanning about with a scope mounted rifle soon tires you out. Scan about with the monocular, then approach to within range, unsling and shoot. Pay attention to fieldcraft as you would with anything else, and rabbits can be approached to within touching distance oblivious to the fact you are watching them. I`ve called in cubs to 20yds and taken them. Nv is something to persevere with. Its not instant success, in fact i nearly sold mine not long after i got it. Now i couldnt be without it. Focal length is very short so you are turning the eye, and objective lenses fractionally all the time to get a sharp picture. Some folks have ir lasers which are supposed to be a huge improvement over ir torches but they are expensive. Cheers Andy.

Only trying to help, please don't shoot the messenger.
