crayfish

I was watching Ray mears wild food last night and he caught some crayfish and cooked them on a open fire and they looked so good , so i have been on ebay today and bought a trap but now i need some information on them ...

 

what bait would you use in the pot?

 

what is the legal side to it ?

Bait wise they will be attracted to any type of meat. Ive used pigeon and rabbits and mackrel and i cat food works a treat aswell!! You really can catch a bucketfull if they are there in any numbers, i have 50 or 60 in a couple of pots left overnight.

Roadkill,

 

you do need a license mate. You can get one from the EA. It's more of a technicality than anything else. The fact is that signal crayfish are effectively the grey squirrels of the river, brought over here from the US and they've decimated the indigenous crayfish as they are much bigger and more aggressive. The licence is a way of getting accross the information that you should not allow any you catch to make it into another watercourse.
