Rossenarra
Reading some of the permanent on line dog training plans, they are fantastic...this forum is a fantastic resource.......... As i work away from home 5 days a week, I bought my wife a german shepard (rookie move should have convinced her that she wants a gun dog)....anyway my wife got her pure bred German Shepard that costed flippin bump........I'm just thinking that I could get my wife to do some of that obience training as she is really interested in all the training techniques (Ceasar millan eat your Heart out) as she is buying books and the like to see can she put some manners on the now wayward but improvong 12 week German shepard So not to ramble on........what's the likehood of a German Shepard being trained to be a retriver, has anyone done it or am I wasting my time?? FBF
i dont know the answer but as i see it any dog can be trained to do just about anything if you put in the effort and show that dog what it needs to do and praise the dog when it does it. you can make a rottweiler the softest dog in the world or make a poodle a man killer if you wanted to. new to the flock
There is no reason why you could not train the dog for some simple retrieving, and possibly some brushing or rough shooting. That said, just remember that you are using a GSD and not a Springer or Lab so he is not going to perform at the same level. Be sure to get him retrieving a knotted sock, tennis ball. or emty plastic drink bottle in the hallway now so that he will develope a natural retrieve and think it is a game. There are many breeds that can do the job if their hearts are in it, they just will never be a specialist. NTTF

dustyfox
German Shephards are very loyal to their owner. My mum has got a german shephard and if I or anyone else walks into a room or goes near her when she takes her out for a walk she will stick to her like glue. I dont know what they are like a retrieving but they are good guard dogs.

Ballymac
Hi, Rossenarra kiss the blarney and convince her that the best thing would be company for her dog, and what better than a gun dog of your choice. Better still get her to train it for you, that's what a Kerry man would do!!
