The M55 that @db58was selling (for his mate) is a really well made gun.

It's an older moder of Tikka (Tikkakoski) which (IMO) will be better made than the current batch of mas produced Tikka rifles.
As long as it's not been shot out - which you can easily get checked - and the seller offers it you at a reasonable price (around £200 to £300).
Braces of Bristol have a .243 for sale @ £150 - the one @db58 is selling looked to be in better condition TBH.
If it is shot out (which to be honest it probably is as it was made in 1970 ish) you can get it rebarrelled which opens up a range of chamberings (.22-250, 243, 6.5CM or .308 for example).

I would expect that you'd end up with a really good rifle for less than you £1K budget.
