Basics in training

NTF has provided us all with good stuff in his training chapters and I'm sure in the months (and years) ahead that I'll still refer to his posts. <_<

What I want to ask folks though is this; what book or books - if any, do you all use as your mainstay for training your dogs? I'm up for a new dog sometime soon and, as it has been roughly ten years since my last one - I'm a bit rusty on some of the basics. It was okay years ago when I first had a dog as my grandfather passed on all the basics and kept an eye on the training. Sadly, he is long passed away and unavailable for comment or advice. (Seances are unpredictable)

I quite like what I've read and heard about Tony Price's book and his methods - what do you folks reckon for a sort of mainstay - you know - the handy reference type reading - not to use as the BIBLE - just something to help me think a bit wider if I come up against problems?

I know I can always get sound advice here on the forum - especially if NTF is around - but it isn't always convenient and needs to be more readily available than the forum.

Any suggestions?

If you need a book go for a breed specific rather than a general gun dog training title.

Good luck

whos a good author for labs?

regards,

Ash

Martin Deeley has written a couple of first class books from basics through to FTCH level on Labs.

I have used his methods with some success and will do again next spring when we have a new lab Pup :good::mad:

(sorry about that, have been dogless for too long )

Don’t restrict yourself to one book and one author, read as many as you can and you will find some useful points and methods in each one. Books by Moxon, Irving, Deeley, Erlandson and Price are all worth a read. I would also recommend Gundog Sense and Sensibility by Wilson Stephens.

There are some great training DVD’s also but out of the bunch I would recommend the training series by Edward Martin as they show him with some raw dogs. Some of the other training DVD’s are finished dogs going through the training process so you don’t get to see them going wrong.

Also consider joining a gundog club and going to their training sessions or seeking help from a pro trainer. You may feel it’s expensive but it will be money well spent and in a few years down the line you see the benefit of your time and outlay.

Hope this helps!

Cheers

MadSpringer - thanks for that  I'll have a look around and see what I can pick up, beg steal or borrow of these books - local library used to be quite good but they seem to have moved away from field related sports - even fishing has very few books to show. :good: Has anyone else noticed this with their local library?

I'll keep in touch to let you all know how it goes.
