Replacing defunct HDD with preinstalled SSD without activation code ?

I need to replace the hard drive that has failed in my Lenovo IdeaPad laptop (windows 8 upgraded to 10)and looking on the bay of everything at getting an SSD’s with preloaded windows 10 as a replacement to get back up and running and also whilst figuring out if possible to recover data from old drive.

Has anyone used these preloaded cheap nondescript drives with any success as they are described as plug and play but there is also mention of no activation key provided which leads me to believe it might not be as straight forward as it seems

Better I think to buy a genuine Win10 key and then you can rebuild your system on a quality SSD, and reinstall later if required.
Type "windows 10 key"  in Google and select "Shopping".

Most of the cheap keys will be OEM so tied to the one computer, and likely sourced from countries where Microsoft supply them for a few pounds each to try to capture developing markets (global markets don't always suck 🙂).

Agreed, Just been mentioned that as laptop had win 8 originally, I should be able to download from Microsoft website and then upgrade to Win10 as “key” will be registered with them electronically

Did you ever set up a windows account - if that is the case there is a good possibility that you can activate online from your license once you log in

Cheers Bob, Not sure if this was sorted when it was purchased and initially set up back when it was new in 2013, no doubt will find out if I replace the drive as not sure or decided yet if this one is worth spending on or a replacement laptop is on the cards as it didn’t seem to like windows 10 when it was up and running as was very slow, I only need a basic laptop as don’t game or watch movies other than YouTube videos so nothing fancy required and can’t justify the ridiculous cost of replacement if not absolutely necessary
