Pigeon numbers

Stood under a really good flight line saturday afternoon in one of my favourite places on my patch and of all the years i've shot this flight line i've never seen as many pigeons as I did saturday. I'd been decoying with very little success so thought i'd just go and have a look at whats flying towards the big woods just beyond my permission If I was honest I wasn't really expecting too much movement as I thought the birds wont be flocked up yet!! How wrong I was, I only shot for a couple of hours and dropped 27 on the wing, they were like grouse in that wind!! I packed up nice and early because I dont want to spoil things for later in the season as this looks like having all the makings to be a good un hopefully?? anyone else seen the big numbers yet??

You must be seeing all the birds that seem to have disappeared from southern Herts - spent four hours out y'day and saw about 10 pigeons - all flying alone.

Though it could have been the four buzzards, 2 kestrels and a sparrowhawk that were gliding around and calling loudly that put them off and kept them away from my permission!

Same here guys, lots of birds showing and watched a few on the edge of a rape field this morning. Bumped into John Shooter today who says the pigeon are now back one the rape fields but only touching the younger fields, he feels it will take a spell of cold weather to get them on the older fields where theres more leaf growth.

Today OCT 31st just as the light was fading a sizeable flock of woodies came in quite high and descended to roost in a mixed plantation...... I watched and they kept on coming, I sat in the Landy watching them stream in for a good 15 mins and made a mental note to return when we next had a good strong wind to keep them lower and on a line.

This is the first time I have seen what I call Winter flocking this early in the year and Im now looking forward to some serious roost shooting in those woods.

They are feeding at the moment on the masses of Acorns we seem to have, Im suprised they are able to take off and fly perhaps I should have a look in the crop and actually count how many acorns they do eat at a time, has anyone done this?
