More progress on reform

Both published Thurs 5th Sept

The Budget Responsibility Bill would require ministers to request an assessment from the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) for every major fiscal announcement and give the OBR the power to decide to publish one if the minister failed to request it. This follows the September 2022 ‘mini-budget’. The statement included plans that would have resulted in a projected £45bn reduction in tax income. It did not have an accompanying OBR assessment.

Long title

A Bill to remove the remaining connection between hereditary peerage and membership of the House of Lords; to abolish the jurisdiction of the House of Lords in relation to claims to hereditary peerages; and for connected purposes.

Does this mean that the House of Lords will have to be renamed as the house of pain (politically affiliated incompetent numpties). I am sure many members of the upper echelons of society would be very keen if the tabloid press are correct!

Wait for the next instalment. Chopping out the aged contingent.

Very much hoping they don't stop there but looks like the republicans amongst us will be disappointed.

It would be great if we could slice the number of MP's too.

I am suspicious of removing hereditary peers from the HoL and replacing them with elected cronies. As I understand, and please correct me otherwise, the HoL is there to keep a check on the excesses of the HoC and their sometimes ludicrous output, a kind of sanity check. Yes, I do realise that sounds like irony. I also accept that it has become bloated and not fit for purpose. Is this down to all the political appointees that get kicked upstairs?

If we have a purely elected second house, is it not a danger that they are there to rubber stamp whatever lunatic idea gets presented to them, depending on which flavour government can stuff the most cronies in?

I share the concern. That said it cannot be right that we have the system full of, hereditary peers, mates of mates, and church nominees. If ever you wanted to get together a group of misfits out of touch with ordinary people living in Britain then this would be it.
