pegasus bridge
Hi Gents, forgive me if this is an obvious question to the more experienced shooters, but in a nutshell i would like to know what i need (the basics) to clean my shotguns (semi auto, sbs and a single barrel) all 12g. at the moment i am wiping down with wd40 (once dry) and doing the same in the barrels, and using airgun cleaning rods to push rags down (again with wd40 on) - i use the wd40 a i have used it for years on air rifles) is this set up ok?.. your advice will be gratefully received !
ph5172
I use gun oil for the outside of the barrels and on the inside , i push some kitchen roll down the barrel then repeat with oiled kitchen roll, but usually after i have given the barrels a good scrubbing with the old wire brush. I then usually oil the metal to metal contact points after i have removed any loose carbon or residue. You can buy a cheap 12g kit with all the rodas and gubbins for about £15 hope that helps
the last engineer
im not a fan of WD40 but thats me, personaly a good wipe over with a oiled rag will suffice, after a gun has been in the field for a days shooting all sorts of debris can accumulate on it, or in it, two cloths are in my cases one dry and clean the other lubed with a light oil, as said a wipe down first then a wipe with the oiled rag for protection, a bore snake takes care of any excess in the barrels, mostly the next shell out cleans it through though  , twice a year i take down the guns, and i mean take down, stock, action strips, pins and springs, ejectors and guides, ect, complete service and dry lube (molycoat) tubes stripped cleaned threads inspected and lubed also, all pins replaced, and away we go. also in all my cases i carry a moisture eliminating desi pac, these are fairly cheap and basicaly soak up any moisture from a closed case, when the identiying port turns white its full and goes in the oven for a recharge, over here the tempreture ranges from shooting ouside in plus +30c weather to minus -20c, condensation can be a bitch, hence the pacs, they work. just a few thing i do. njc110381
Drop the WD40 for some gun oil (I use Napier spray with EP90, it's a vapour releasing oil that protects the gun really well and isn't expensive). Get a proper rod and jag/bronze brush (or a boresnake will do). Total cost about £25. If you go for the rods just push kitchen roll down on the jag, there's no need for posh patches or cloth. I use a J cloth or rag for the outside, with a bit of Napier spray on it.
